Parenting's Overwhelming Weight: When It Gets to Be Too Much

Introduction

Behind the smiles and social media posts, many parents struggle in silence with stress, worry, and even despair. Parenting is generally portrayed as a happy and rewarding adventure. It is extremely stressful to be expected to be the ideal parent, support a child, and make sure they succeed. My wife, Chitu Rani, is the subject of this narrative. She dealt with parental fatigue and postpartum depression but managed to recover.
With a newborn baby, along with the task of shifting houses.

"With a newborn baby, along with the task of shifting houses, Baby, Boxes, and Life’s Big Changes"

When her first child was born, 32-year-old Chitu Rani was overjoyed. But her mental health soon suffered as a result of the realities of restless nights, unceasing sobbing, and an excessive amount of responsibility. She felt guilty for not experiencing the joy she believed she should, worn out, and emotionally aloof.

Chitu Rani  remembers, "I felt like I was drowning." "I was falling apart on the inside, but everyone expected me to be happy."

"Alongside my husband's sudden job transfer to another city, handling a 4-month-old newborn and shifting houses, it was an exhausting situation."

Breaking Down & Seeking Help
As the months passed, Chitu Rani’s feelings of helplessness intensified. One evening, when I was in the house with looking at my son and playing with him, she broke down in front of me, confessing that she no longer felt like herself. Thankfully, I understood her struggles and encouraged her took her outside and had long discussion about her difficulties, In times when my absences she had very difficult managing both as my son along with work at house. She said He is not allowing me to move even to restroom and for taking water to drink. He always wants me to carry him along side and wanted me to be with him always. Started it was oking, but days to go felt hard and now i feel over stressed. listenning this started sharing more time with her and understood her difficulties, finally found a solutions that brought housemaid to support in kitchen and other house work. Also made her to spend time in prayer at times of my son sleeping time. And also made her some OTT connection to spend her time in watching some useful videos.

Alosng side brought her to Chapel and prayer room for counseling, apart from that made her to spend time in exercise, and self-care routines, Chitu Rani slowly regained her confidence and joy.

The Reality of Parental Stress Chitu Rani's story is one of millions. Studies show that one in five mothers experiences postpartum depression, while fathers, too, suffer from parental anxiety but often remain silent.

Workplace Anxiety: The Corporate Burnout Epidemic
In the competitive world of corporate jobs, the demand to perform is constant. Employees are required to achieve deadlines, exceed expectations, and consistently demonstrate their value. While ambition promotes success, it also generates a hidden crisis: professional worry and fatigue. This is the story of Amit, a young professional who was on the verge of failing due to corporate pressures, and how he turned his life around. Amit, a 28-year-old marketing executive, landed his dream job at a reputed multinational company. The excitement of working in a fast-paced environment soon faded as he found himself buried under unrealistic expectations, long hours, and an always-on work culture. “I was answering emails at midnight, attending back-to-back meetings, and skipping meals just to keep up,” he recalls. What started as mild stress gradually became chronic anxiety. Amit found himself constantly overthinking, struggling to sleep, and experiencing a racing heart even on weekends. The fear of underperformance kept him in a cycle of overworking, leaving him physically and mentally drained.
“I couldn’t focus, I felt worthless, and even small tasks felt overwhelming,” he shares. One day, during a crucial presentation, he blacked out from sheer exhaustion.
His colleagues rushed him to the medical room, where the doctor diagnosed him with severe work-induced anxiety and stress-related fatigue. That moment was a wake-up call.

The High-Pressure Work Culture

The Breaking Point Months of pushing himself beyond his limits led to severe burnout. Amit began experiencing frequent headaches, lack of concentration, and emotional exhaustion. His once-passionate drive for work turned into sheer dread.

Seeking Help and Making a Change
Realizing he needed to take charge of his well-being, Amit decided to seek help. He went to a meditation center, where he learned the way to manage stress and set healthy boundaries. He spoke to his manager about reducing his workload, took time off, and started prioritizing self-care.

Amit also adopted stress management practices such as daily meditation, exercise, and structured work breaks. Slowly, his energy and enthusiasm returned. “The biggest change was learning to say no and valuing my health over deadlines,” he says.

The Reality of Corporate Burnout

Steps to Manage Workplace Anxiety

Set Boundaries: Work-life balance is essential. Disconnect from emails and work calls after office hours. Short breaks during work improve focus and reduce stress.

Prioritize Mental Health: Seek therapy or counseling if stress becomes overwhelming.

Open Communication: Speak with managers about workload concerns.

Practice Self-Care: Exercise, meditation, and hobbies help relieve stress.

Amit’s story is not unique. According to a 2023 survey by the World Health Organization (WHO), 48% of corporate employees suffer from work-related anxiety and burnout. The pressure to be constantly available, meet unrealistic goals, and maintain a competitive edge is taking a severe toll on mental health.

Amit's path from burnout to recovery demonstrates the importance of mental health in the workplace. No job is worth compromising one's health. Companies must cultivate a culture that values employee well-being rather than praising excessive work. If you feel overwhelmed, remember that your health is more important than any deadline.

“Success means nothing if it comes at the cost of your well-being.”

From Stigma to Strength: Mental Health in Indian Society

Mental health remains a taboo topic in many parts of Indian society, where discussing depression, anxiety, or therapy is often met with skepticism or dismissal. The stigma attached to mental illness prevents many individuals from seeking help, leading to severe consequences. This is the story of Priya, a woman who fought against social stigma to prioritize her mental health.

A Silent Battle
Priya, a 35-year-old school teacher, had been struggling with anxiety and depression for years. However, growing up in a traditional family, she was taught that mental health struggles were a sign of weakness. Whenever she tried to express her feelings, she was told to "stay strong" or "pray harder." The fear of being judged kept her from seeking professional help.

“I felt like no one understood me,” Priya recalls. “Even when I knew something was wrong, I was afraid of what people would say.”

Taking the First Step
After experiencing a severe anxiety attack, Priya decided to reach out to a therapist. Her decision was met with resistance from her family, who questioned why she couldn’t just "snap out of it." But Priya persisted, knowing she needed to take care of herself.

Through therapy, she learned healthy coping mechanisms, the importance of self-care, and how to navigate her emotions without guilt. Over time, she found relief and began advocating for mental health awareness in her community.

The Stigma Around Mental Health in India
Mental health stigma in India is deeply rooted in cultural beliefs, lack of awareness, and fear of social rejection. Studies show that over 80% of Indians with mental health issues do not seek professional help, fearing societal judgment.

How to Break the Stigma:

  • Normalize conversations – Talking about mental health should be as common as discussing physical health.

  • Educate & advocate – Schools and workplaces should introduce mental health awareness programs.

  • Encourage professional help – Therapy and counseling should be seen as valuable resources, not weaknesses.

Conclusion
Priya’s journey reflects the larger issue of mental health stigma in India. It takes courage to seek help in a society that often discourages it. By starting conversations and challenging outdated beliefs, we can create a world where mental health is prioritized, respected, and supported.

“Healing begins when we stop judging and start understanding.”

By the time she was in her twenties, she struggled with severe anxiety, trust issues, and recurring nightmares. “I thought I was broken beyond repair,” Neha recalls. “The past followed me everywhere.”
